Just When We Thought It Would Never Stop Raining
By Charles Carr
he June 25th and 26th weekend was finally dry, not to mention hot. I spent the weekend with friends, alternating
between working and playing outside. IT WAS AWESOME, no rain to keep us indoors! The constant spring to summer
rain was driving doubt that my spring yard work would never get done!
Hot Topic .

Spyware, Worse than Ever
I recently had the misfortune of coming across a nasty Malware variant. It is still unknown how to completely
remove it. I had a PC dropped off to me that would barely boot. After 3 hours of running Spybot, Ad-Aware, Pest
Patrol, and Hijack this, it was obvious that there was a BHO (Browser Helper Object) buried in the registry that
noneof the Malware tools were removing. I scrubbed the registry very carefully and got to the point where Spybot
would recognize Malware attempting to install and deny the install. This was 5 hours, not the worst infection I
had ever seen but by far the most tenacious. The following morning, I received one of the many monthly
newsletters I receive about spyware in my inbox. This fellow knew about a site that is known for Malware
installations and after clicking yes to the Active X installation , spent the next 5 hours cleaning up Malware
from 1 download that occurred right in front of him. Read the full story here:

It used to be that you had to visit suspicious sites (Adult, downloads, or game patch sites) to end up with
Malware. Now, more often than not, we find it on sites targeted to children. see this MSNBC article:

I would recommend downloading the Yahoo toolbar for IE or Mozilla Firefox
http://toolbar.yahoo.com/ this is a quick Malware
checker that can be run after any browser session. Also, you should enable Tea Timer on Spybot and discuss this
threat with your children.
