No one likes cobwebs
By: Charles Carr, EIT

y house, like most others, has a few cobwebs. We do our best to get rid of them, working with a duster or a broom to whisk them away. My wife doesn’t like spiders, she leaves the “webs” to me. As I knocked a few away the other day, I said to myself “No one likes cobwebs, not even the spiders that make them”. Hey if they did, wouldn’t they still be living there?

Ask yourself, “Do I have a website or do I have a cobweb”. If you haven’t been maintaining your web presence, go take a look and I wager you will find some cobwebs. We can’t use a broom on these bad boys, but really with minimal effort we can take the cobwebs out of your website. Let’s forget about spiders for a second, those nasty little beasts with all those legs, eyes and abandoned homes are not really my forte…my spiders are search engine algorithms and my web was not made to catch flys! My web catches people’s attention.

Advisory Council Site Is An Engine For Change

by: Rosella Melanson

Two and a half years ago, the Advisory Council on the Status of Women wanted a “makeover” in both how we were perceived and how we worked.

A significant “engine” for the change we made has been our internet site.

What is Wi-Fi? By: Adam Stapledon

The webopedia defines it as -
(n.) short for wireless fidelity and is meant to be used generically when referring of any type of 802.11 network, whether 802.11b, 802.11a, dual-band, etc.

Here in Fredericton we are among the lucky ones as we have the Fred e-Zone. This is a free access wireless network that encompasses most of King and Queen Streets, as well as the lower portions of Smythe, York and Regent Streets, and most of Main Street on the Northside, with plans to expand to include all of Fredericton.

Find out how you and your business can take advantage of this free service.

Miek’s Dime    By: Miek Gall

This month, Miek’s Dime is aimed toward a growing and frustrating trend in infections.  The Browser Hijacker

I think a lot of readers will recognize the symptoms.  A Browser Hijacker will take over your start page or search page, this may appear like an innocent error but below I have targeted Fredericton’s worst culprit: CoolWebSearch.

What will it do?
Changing your “search” page to pass all searches to a certain pay-per-search site. Changing your default home page to the company page (most often porn sites). Transmitting URLs viewed toward the company server.

CoolWebSearch will also use crafty names to make you think that it is a Microsoft process BootConf, MSInfo, SvcHost, DNSRelay, winlink, XPlugin.

Be very careful as svchost.exe is a legitimate and critical Microsoft process. Stopping or deleting this Microsoft file can stop windows from working all together.

CoolWebSearch Comes in a variety of versions, all using different techniques. Handle with extreme care! My personal favourite:
CoolWebSearch/MSSPI: a search results hijacker implemented as a Winsock2 Layered Service Provider (a fairly low-level networking component, which is Siriously tricky to remove).
Removing this will stop all access to the network or the Internet from your PC. I have seen PC’s with this variant taking hours to cure.  My recommendation for this one is to Format and re-install.

Sirius Solutions Recommends:
Attack the Virus before the Virus attacks you. Buy Norton Anti-Virus from Sirius Solutions. Only $35 *Includes Updates

When you delete files on a mapped network drive (over the network) those files bypass the server’s recycling bin. So when deleting network files be extra sure you no longer need them as you don’t get a second chance like you would on your own computer.

if you push “windows” key and “D” all open windows will minimize
